Peat and Repeat

An artist-run edition house in Ridgewood
ongoing
editions / print / publishing

A fluid collection of artists, poets and performers practicing slow cultural repair through decomposition, preservation and reuse: an artist-run 501(c)(3) edition house, nomadically located in Queens, New York, producing prints, photographs, artists’ books, apparel and ephemera to support artists and artist projects.

A core read down through its beds, and the registration marks that hold an edition true.
A core read down through its beds, and the registration marks that hold an edition true.

The name, and the premise

The name came out of a running joke about life’s repetitions, redundancies, rehashing, recycling and reruns. Since 2021 the primary objective has been to support artist projects through the sale of prints, editions, original works and ephemera, specifically the work of artists who are most often operating without financial safety nets.

What the artists have in common is a critical embrace of the subversive metaphor: the bird that doesn’t sing, squares that are not square, the pretty picture that’s ugly, the waking dream, the ghost in the machine.

What it publishes

Prints, photographs, artists’ books, apparel and ephemera, plus the Woodbine Art Auction, and BOG, the book series the vision is now being furthered through. In 2026 the house is also orienting toward artist-initiated in-situ environmental projects: expansive, long-term platforms for working with and within communities, near and far.

The pricing experiment

It began with universal pricing: every print the same price. That was a good idea and not a sustainable one, so prices rose on some work and edition sizes changed. What survived is the commitment to a range of affordability: for some the prices are too high and for others too low, which is roughly what an honest answer to the art market looks like.

“Now more than ever is the time for collective endeavors.” The house takes its bearings from a line of Louise Bourgeois’: “It is not so much where my motivation comes from but rather how it manages to survive.”
